Uses

A list of tools, hardware, and software I use for work, hobbies, and other research. Inspired by uses.tech.

Hardware

Computers

  • ASUS ROG Flow X13 — my current main device, previously a heavy ThinkPad user, but due to increasing mobile needs I had to switch to better hardware.
  • HP ProBook 440 G8 — work laptop provided by the office, currently has 32 GB of RAM. Before the AI bubble, I actually used this more than my personal device, lol.
  • Lenovo ThinkCentre M920P — mini PC I use as a home lab with Proxmox installed to run several virtualized OSes.
  • Lenovo ThinkPad X250 — my first ThinkPad, bought second-hand, upgraded SSD and RAM, but due to its aging compute it has been retired by the devices above.

Accessories

  • Ajazz AK650 Pro — probably my fourth mechanical keyboard, bought it because I fell for the TFT screen and knob gimmick, but it works well like any keyboard with the added bonus of supporting 3 connection types.
  • Noir M2 Pro — currently trying a wireless mouse, again bought for the gimmick. Not sure whether the glass skeet actually helps my Valorant aim, but I really enjoy using such a lightweight mouse. I don’t think I can go back to heavy mice. The only downside is the white color has picked up a lot of stains that won’t come off.

Software

Operating Systems

  • Kali Linux — main OS for security research, pentesting, and general experimentation. Installed on a VM on the office laptop and the home server.
  • Debian Linux — used to be a die-hard Ubuntu user, but after Ubuntu got too bloated with Canonical’s stuff I switched to the “father” itself, Debian. One reason I installed Debian was that I can play Dota without lag.
  • Windows 11 Enterprise — main OS on the office laptop. Since everyone at the office uses Windows, I have to use it too as personal research, especially around MDM Intune which is quite a headache. A friend of mine said “a doctor who injects himself.”

Terminal & Shell

  • Bash — in Bash we trust
  • tmux — incredibly useful terminal multiplexer, though the key bindings took some getting used to at first
  • Vim — primary text editor, see my daily vim setup

Development & DevOps

  • Git / GitHub — version control and collaboration, don’t forget to follow my GitHub
  • Hugo — static site generator (this site is built with Hugo), thanks to Riyan for the Hugo sharing session back then
